Dick DeVos is the son of the innovative entrepreneur that founded AmWay. The younger DeVos is a man of significant accomplishments in his own right.
Dick DeVos is ranked as the 67th wealthiest person in the United States, according to Forbes magazine. He has an estimated net work of about $5.1 billion.
From 1993 to 2002, Dick DeVos did serve as the chief executive officer of AmWay. In 2006, he ran in the Democratic primary for Governor of Michigan, losing to the woman who ultimately would be elected to that office.
In the early 1990s, Devos’ family purchased the National Basketball Association’s Orlando Magic. He became president of the franchise at the time his family took control.
DeVos is a principal of the Windquest Group, which is an enterprise perhaps best defined as a social business. The company is defined as being dedicated to environmentally sustainable and economically responsible endeavors. One of its major achievements is what is known as The Green Machine. The Green Machine converts wasted heat that occurs during manufacturing processes into electricity. DeVoss currently services as the President of this enterprise.
In addition to his business interests and accomplishments, DeVos is an active philanthropist. He is the President of the Dick and Betsy DeVos Foundation. The Dick and Betsy DeVos Foundation is deeply active in supporting efforts in a number of different arenas that include artistic, religious, educational and civic programs, projects, activities and organizations.
DeVos, through his foundation, has been particularly active in the arts, including a major endowment to the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. of over $22 million. He has been active on the boards of a number of different arts agencies and organizations in the United States.
DeVoss is the author of the book Rediscovering American Values, a text about solving problems through taking personal responsibility. The forward to the book was written by former U.S. President Gerald R. Ford. He is a recipient of the Spectrum Health Foundation.
Other projects and organizations in which DeVoss is involved include his service as the Co-Chairman of Grand Action Committee. He is on the Board of Trustees of Thunderbird School of Global Management and serves on the Board of Directors of the Michigan State Chamber of Commerce. He is the founder and currently serves as the Chairman of the Board of the West Michigan Aviation Academy, a charter school. He is a member of the boards of Health Care Foundation and Spectrum Health System.
